There are tons of crows that live near my house, so I see them all the time, but I never think much about them or what they might be trying to tell me.  I told my therapist that I do my Signs series, and she told me that crows are the animals she sees around her the most and feels a spiritual connection with, so Robyn, this is for you.

Crows are an interesting symbol with many common messages and interpretations, with positive and negative connotations.  Crows are spiritually and culturally significant all around the world, from Native American cultures to Celtic, Norse, and Greek cultures.  The main themes surrounding crows and their meaning are intelligence and higher perspective, change, connection to the spiritual realm, and creation.  All of these themes are interconnected, both in the world and in the ways in which crows represent them.

Many of the more abstract connotations of crows and other signs come from their real-life attributes.  For example, crows often build their nests extremely high up in the trees, which has created an association with higher vision, greater perspective, and intelligence.  They can serve as a reminder for us to take on a different perspective and address the bigger picture.  Also, in terms of higher vision, crows are known to be spiritually connected creatures who can bring messages from other worlds.  They are known to bring messages from ancestors and loved ones who have passed on.  Crows are also connected to "sacred law," which refers to the natural order of the world, and when you spot a crow, it might be calling you to tap into your intuition.  This may occur in moments in which something is not in alignment, and it may be up to you to follow the path of what feels right rather than forcing a different outcome.

Crows are commonly interpreted to be cunning, manipulative, and mischievous.  While there might be good reasons for this reputation, some of the main attributes behind these descriptors are creativity, boldness, and audacity.  Of course, these characteristics can be used for malicious purposes, such as to trick or manipulate others, but these can also be strong guiding principles for a fulfilling life.  Crows remind us to be our true selves and not to shy away from what we truly desire.  They urge us to tap into our innate creative ideas and urges to enact change and make magic happen all around us.  This can also help us to be more flexible and adaptable.  When we are in tune with our creativity, we are likely to feel less intimidated or upset when things take a turn because we know that we can pivot and construct a new plan of action.

Crows can sometimes be considered a bad omen because of their association with death, but death is not always a bad thing.  Death means change.  When we hear this word, we often think of the end of a life and the loss of a loved one, which is painful for us.  But death can mean so much more than that; it is a stage in a continuous cycle.  When one door closes, or a story ends, it makes room for the start of something new, often something better than what was before.

Similarly, crows can often signify the mystery of life, existence, and creation.  The black and iridescent colors of their feathers represent the mysterious nature of our universe and the potential for beauty to be born from the mystery.  Crows symbolize the power of what is not yet but could be.  In this way, crows should also be considered a good omen and symbolize hope and growth when encountering them during a tough time.

Interestingly, the message you can interpret might depend on the number of crows you encounter.

As always, when encountering crows, make sure to get quiet and listen for their message.  Their messages can vary so widely that they are sure to have a unique one for you.
